After doing research on the web and talking to your girlfriends, you have lined up interviews with three prospectives doulas. This maybe your first or second birth, but the first time using a doula. How will you know which doula is the best fit for you and your family? Here are some questions to ask and consider before hiring a doula to attend your birth.
1. What is your birth philosophy?
Your birth philosophy is a combination of knowledge, past experience, shared stories and values. It's important to keep in mind that ones philosophy may change and evolve over time.
- Does your doula's philosophy complement your birth philosophy and birth preferences?
- Does your doula bring her own biases and/or agenda to the birthing space?
A doula’s role is to make sure the birthing person is educated on the birth process and is confident in making decisions for themselves. At Doulas of Las Vegas we pride ourselves on offering compassionate and non-judgmental care. We support you and your choices!
2. What type of training or continuing education do you have?
Every doula should attend a reputable in person or online training. In addition, be working towards certification or have certification already. Doulas will usually continue to take trainings throughout their career.
3. What other services do you offer?
Having knowledge in other areas makes for a better doula. Other services commonly offered include such as lactation support, childbirth education and postpartum doula support. All of our doulas have additional training in complimentary services.
4. Do you have a reliable backup doula?
Life can be unpredictable. Having a reliable backup doula is extremely important! However, it’s not just about having a doula to back you up, you want to make sure that doula has a similar birth philosophy and will treat the client with the same respect. They client chose to hire me so I don't feel comfortable leaving their birth experience up to chance. When you hire a doula from Doulas of Las Vegas, you can be assured that you will get an experienced, professional doula at your birth no matter what happens! We have a fantastic group of doulas ready to help! Clients find that to be a huge relief!
5. What is your doula fee and what does that cover?
Doula fees can vary depending on what city you live in or how experienced the doula is. Our doula fees start at $800 and goes up to $1000 depending on experience. Our doula fee includes unlimited email, text and phone conversations, two prenatal visits, support during your labor and one postpartum visit. Half of the fee is due when our contract is signed and the other half is required when the client is 36 weeks pregnant.
6. How many clients do you take each month?
A full-time doula may take a range from 2-4 clients per month. If they have a solid backup or work as a team they may take more. Our doulas follow the standard and take 2-4 clients each, a month.
7. What are your feelings towards medication in labor?
You may have already met or talked to some doulas who feel strongly about having a natural birth. We are here to let you know that we support ALL variations of birth. At Doulas of Las Vegas, we support all birthing choices without judgment or bias. We leave the decision making up to the birthing person and partner and put our efforts into providing them with the knowledge and education to understand the medications and any procedures.
