Hello, I'm Kim Kobernik.
Postpartum and Overnight Doula
I owe my connection and interest in helping women during their postpartum period all to my mother. I grew up during an era when mothers were told that formula feeding was better for both baby and mother. My mother however, insisted on breastfeeding all five of us until we were at least two years old. Being the oldest, this set a wonderful example of what normal newborn feeding looked like. When it came time to have my own children, there was never any question of whether or not I would breastfeed. I faced many struggles during the first weeks of breastfeeding both of my children. Despite the offer of assistance from lactation staff at the hospital, I suffered through the pain and persevered.
It wasn't until years later, when I learned that you could be a lactation counselor and not have to be a nurse. Reflecting back, I realized how lactation support could have benefitted me greatly through those struggles. If only I could go back and do it again! I am very passionate about the wonders of human breast milk, and the many benefits it affords to mothers and babies. Through my work as a Certified Lactation Counselor, I learned of the opportunity to serve women not just with breastfeeding assistance, but also helping to support them in general during the time after delivery as a Postpartum Doula. I think this works hand-in-hand with lactation support, and I immediately signed up for the training. I am so happy I did. I look forward to the opportunities to help give families the support and encouragement they need during one of the biggest and happiest transitions in their lives!
