Q & A
Tell us about yourself? I am currently a stay at home mom for Emaline, who turned 9 months old in June. I moved to Vegas in May 2017 for my husband's job. I also do some part-time adjunct work for an online social work program. My hobbies (along with yoga of course) include knitting, reading, and exploring the outdoors.
What is your biggest challenge as a mom? Perfectionism! I tend to overthink every decision and wonder if it's the "right" choice, and I blame myself when I make mistakes or if things aren't going the way I think they should. Sometimes I put too much pressure on myself to do everything and I have trouble asking for help.
What is your favorite part about being a mom? Along with the intense attachment and love that comes with being a mom, I love watching Emaline explore the world and learn new skills. She is so fascinated and delighted by simple every day things that I take for granted. I love making her laugh.
What advice would you give to new moms? Practice self-compassion. According to Psychologist and researcher Kristin Neff, Self-Compassion has three elements: Mindfulness (being grounded in the present moment and living through the challenges and joys of each stage as they come and go), Self-Kindness (talking to yourself, treating yourself, and comforting yourself as you would someone you love), and Common Humanity (remembering that you are not alone - there are many others out there who can relate to what you are going through, and opening up with them can and having that "me too" moment can make a world of difference!). (www.selfcompassion.org has a lot more helpful information about this practice)
Anyone who you would you like to thank that has helped you through motherhood? I am so thankful for the community of moms I've met through prenatal and postnatal yoga classes. I truly can't imagine going through this journey without their support! I am also thankful to my husband for being such a kind and loving and patient parent and partner.
